Distracted driving: When is enough... enough?

It's no secret that distracted driving is dangerous. Ask anyone you know and they will probably agree.

But despite all the warnings - despite the statistics - the distracted driving problem in the United States continues to grow. Smart phones, GPS devices, pedometers, tablets, and other electronic devices demand the precious attention of drivers as they navigate our roadways.

But at what cost?

According to Distraction.gov, 3,154 people were killed in car accidents caused by distracted driving in 2013. In the same year, 424,000 were injured in distracted driving accidents.

Thousands of deaths and serious injuries are caused every year. All because drivers prioritize text messages, emails or phone calls over safe driving.

What can be done? Greater awareness, education, and legislation offer opportunities for decreasing this risk. But we are a long way from totally eliminating distracted driving.

The more people that commit to stopping these dangerous habits, the safer we all become. And holding those responsible for causing these preventable accidents is another step that must be taken.
