NFL star facing robbery and DUI charges

Football fans in Washington may be familiar with Indianapolis Colts defensive lineman David Perry. The 24-year-old nose tackle has started 32 times for the Colts since being selected in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL draft, but he is facing a raft of criminal charges including robbery, assault and driving under the influence after being taken into custody by police in Arizona. Perry is alleged to have stolen a golf cart after punching its driver following a night of drinking with two friends.

According to a Scottsdale Police Department report, officers arrived at an apartment complex on East Osborn Road after receiving a 911 call at approximately 2:30 a.m. The driver of a golf cart is said to have told the officers that a man later identified as Perry had struck him on the head before making off with his vehicle. The golf cart was being legally used as a taxi according to police.

Officers then received a call about a hit-and-run accident, and they say that they arrived at the scene to find Perry on the sidewalk beside the damaged golf cart. Officers claim that the Perry appeared highly intoxicated, and the NFL standout is said to have admitted to consuming large quantities of alcohol. Perry is likely to face league disciplinary action as well criminal sanctions, and reports that he acted belligerently toward police and used offensive language are unlikely to help his cause.

Criminal defense attorneys may seek to settle drunk driving cases during plea negotiations when police have provided prosecutors with compelling evidence, but these discussions could be made more difficult if their clients have made incriminating statements or acted aggressively toward law enforcement. Experienced attorneys hoping to avoid such situations may advise their clients to cooperate with police and avail themselves of their right to remain silent.
